The Sandy Bay Preschool Program is committed to giving each child positive educational opportunities that will develop his/her social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth. We honor play as the child’s work. We recognize that each child develops at his/her own pace and we respect individual progress. We seek to promote an ongoing love of learning. An emphasis is placed on recognizing learning as a process that continues throughout a lifetime. Additionally, the Sandy Bay Preschool is committed to building community among our families and between our families and the surrounding community. Through the work we do together, our families forge strong bonds that persist well beyond the preschool years.
The foundation and structure of the Sandy Bay Curriculum is based on a Traditional Half Day Preschool model which includes Free Play, Circle Time, Music and Movement, Arts and Crafts, Literature, Science, Math, Dramatic Play, Outdoor Play, Field Trips, and Enrichment Activities such as Music, Yoga, and Dance. Although our curriculum includes traditional components, it is presented as open ended, experiential, emergent, and process oriented.
Themes are seasonally based, accompanied by a strong support of children's literature and a balance between teacher directed and child explored activities.
Our teaching style is, first and foremost, warm and nurturing, and reflects a variety of child-centered educational philosophies and practices such as Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia. Our teachers work together to be emotionally available; always ready to comfort, mediate, listen, explain, encourage, and direct.
For the greater part of each day, children can move freely from one activity to another, allowing them to interact independently with their environment and each other, while under the mindful supervision, guidance, and loving care of their teachers and Parent Helpers who help them navigate this process.
During "Morning Circle", teacher-led activities are introduced that are designed to help children expand their knowledge and awareness of new, as well as of familiar, ideas and concepts. The children are invited to participate, contribute, and express themselves in an atmosphere of cooperation, consideration, and mutual respect.
Also integral to our Daily Schedule, in all but the most inclement weather, is the ample time children spend outside in our secure and well appointed playground. The combination of fresh air, physical space, and the freedom of unstructured play, combined with the earlier activities of the day, helps achieve the balance needed for the health and well-being of the whole child.
Children return to the classroom refreshed and ready to enjoy lunch with their friends. This is a time to engage in conversation and community after which they are encouraged, with teacher support, to gather their belongings and prepare for "Good Bye Time" and dismissal.
In Rockport, we are fortunate to be surrounded by the natural beauty of our local environment and consider it to be an extension of our classroom. Much of our curriculum is influenced by the changing seasons and accompanying holidays and events. We invite parents to enrich our learning experience and curriculum by sharing with us their cultural traditions, personal skills and interests, and any special knowledge or expertise they may have about the natural world around us.
